MC Alger put continental ambitions on the line against ASN Nigelec

MC Alger begin their CAF Champions League campaign in Niamey on a mission to secure progress to the second qualifying round, with ASN Nigelec standing between the Algerian club and the next stage of the competition.

The match, part of the first round of the preliminary phase, will be played at the Stade Syni Kountche. Kick-off is scheduled for 15:30 GMT.

MC Alger have gradually established themselves as regular participants in the CAF Champions League. The Algerian side has reached at least the group stage in each of the past two seasons, underlining its growing presence in the continent’s leading club competition.

In the 2024-25 campaign, MC Alger went as far as the quarter-finals. The following season, however, the club faced a difficult group featuring Mamelodi Sundowns, who went on to win the competition.

That recent experience gives MC Alger a significant level of continental exposure as they begin another campaign, but they must first overcome an ASN Nigelec side determined to produce a landmark result. The visitors will be expected to draw on their greater experience of the CAF Champions League, although the tie presents a demanding opening assignment away from home.

ASN Nigelec are not regarded as one of the major forces in African club football. The Nigerien team has enjoyed strong performances domestically, but it is still seeking a defining campaign in continental competition.

To date, ASN Nigelec have not managed to reach the group stage of the CAF Champions League. Their closest attempt came in the 2022-23 season, when they progressed beyond the first round before their run ended in the second round against Wydad Casablanca.

That was a particularly difficult draw, with Wydad Casablanca entering the tie as the reigning champions. ASN Nigelec were unable to take the final step towards the group stage, leaving the club still waiting for its breakthrough at this level.

The meeting in Niamey therefore carries different significance for the two teams. MC Alger are seeking to maintain their recent record of advancing deep into the competition, while ASN Nigelec are chasing a result that could move them closer to a first appearance in the group stage.

The Algerian club will travel to the Nigerien capital knowing that the first-round tie is the opening test of its latest continental campaign. ASN Nigelec, meanwhile, will aim to use home advantage at Stade Syni Kountche to challenge a side with a stronger recent record in the CAF Champions League.
