Former DR Congo striker Dieumerci Mbokani has entered the race for leadership within the Congolese Football Federation (FECOFA), aligning himself with Aziz Makukula and calling for unity across the country’s football community.

Mbokani, one of the most recognisable figures in Congolese football, has declared his support for Makukula, a former Portugal international of Congolese origin, as the federation prepares for a new electoral cycle.

The move signals a shift in direction, with both men advocating for greater involvement of former players in the management of the national game.

The 38-year-old has agreed to serve as Makukula’s running mate for the vice-presidential position, forming a partnership built on the belief that those with experience on the pitch are best placed to guide the sport off it.

The alliance is presented as part of a broader effort to reshape the federation and bring a different approach to its leadership.

Mbokani said he had been persuaded by Makukula’s programme and vision for the future of Congolese football, describing it as a project centred on unity and professionalism.

He indicated that the proposal to bring together former international players was a key factor in his decision to join the campaign.

The former Leopards forward also stressed that the intention behind his involvement is rooted in a desire to improve the structure and governance of football in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He described his commitment as a patriotic one, aimed at helping to modernise an organisation that he believes requires significant change.

Despite the optimism surrounding the partnership, Mbokani acknowledged that not all former players have remained aligned with the initiative.

Some individuals who were initially involved have since stepped away, a development he said he regretted.

However, he made clear that such setbacks would not alter his determination to pursue the proposed reforms.

Alongside his support for Makukula, Mbokani addressed speculation about divisions within the country’s football community.

In particular, he spoke about his relationship with former national team striker Shabani Nonda, seeking to dispel any suggestion of conflict between prominent figures.

“Shabani is our Congolese brother. It’s not too late for us to come together,” he said.

Mbokani emphasised that there was no hostility between former players and that collaboration would be essential if the federation was to move forward.

He argued that personal ambitions should not take precedence over the collective interests of football in the country, urging all stakeholders to focus on common goals.

The former striker also responded to questions regarding Makukula’s identity and suitability to lead the federation.

He reaffirmed that Makukula was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo and called for support across the nation to back the initiative.

For Mbokani, the debate over leadership should centre on competence and vision rather than background.

He reiterated the importance of unity, suggesting that bringing together experienced figures from the game could help establish a stronger and more representative federation.

The campaign is framed around the idea of creating a more professional structure within FECOFA, with an emphasis on expertise drawn from playing experience.

Mbokani believes that such an approach could help address longstanding challenges and provide a clearer direction for the future.

As the election process approaches, the partnership between Mbokani and Makukula is likely to become a focal point of discussion within Congolese football.

Their message of unity and reform is expected to resonate with some, while others may continue to scrutinise their plans.

For now, Mbokani has made his position clear: he is committed to supporting Makukula’s bid and to promoting a unified approach aimed at strengthening football in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
