Matthias Jaissle praises Newcastle response after Bournemouth fightback

Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle said he was pleased with his side’s reaction after they recovered from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Bournemouth in the third round of the Premier League.

Newcastle struggled to match Bournemouth’s intensity in the first half and conceded twice, but mounted a strong comeback after the break to earn a point. Jaissle admitted his team could have taken all three points had they performed at their best throughout the match.

“I have mixed feelings, but after the start we made, you have to be happy,” Jaissle told BBC. “However, if we had been able to produce our best level over the 90 minutes, we would have been capable of taking all three points.”

The Newcastle boss accepted that his side had been unsettled by Bournemouth’s approach during the opening period.

“We could not match Bournemouth’s intensity in the first half and conceded two goals, which was something we could have avoided,” he said. “But I am proud of the team because it showed a strong reaction.”

Jaissle said Newcastle had expected a difficult contest, pointing to the sides’ previous meetings as evidence that matches between them are rarely straightforward.

“We knew it would be an extremely difficult game, and if you look at the history of our matches against Bournemouth, you will find they have never been easy,” he added. “We wanted to win, and we have to make sure we take three points in the next game.”

Newcastle’s players and staff received an encouraging response from the home support after the final whistle, with Jaissle saying the fans recognised the effort behind the comeback.

“There was a lot of satisfaction after we made our way around the pitch following the game,” he said. “They saw that the team was trying and believed in itself. We almost completed the comeback, but in the end we got at least one point, and I saw a lot of happy faces in the stands.”

Jaissle also suggested the result could provide optimism for what Newcastle may achieve in the future.

“The whole club and the fans can enjoy what we can expect from it in the future,” he said.

The draw extended a disappointing run for Bournemouth, who have now dropped points late in each of their first three Premier League matches.

They were beaten by Manchester City despite leading until the 81st minute, before conceding an equaliser in the 90th minute and stoppage time against Everton. They then surrendered a two-goal advantage against Newcastle to lose another two points.

Bournemouth became the first team in Premier League history to fail to win any of their opening three matches despite taking the lead in each game.

The result leaves Bournemouth 14th in the table with two points. Newcastle moved up to sixth with five points from one win and two draws.
