Massire Sylla is making a significant impression at Union Saint-Gilloise, with the 21-year-old Senegalese defender emerging as one of the club’s key personalities this season.

The centre-back or defensive midfielder scored and helped create another goal as Union Saint-Gilloise beat Cercle Bruges 5-2 in the ninth round of the Jupiler Pro League last weekend.

His performance was particularly notable because Sylla had scored an own goal in the 48th minute. Rather than allowing the setback to affect him, he responded with a determined display, scoring for his side and contributing to another goal as Union Saint-Gilloise completed a convincing victory.

Seydou Bocar Seck, president of Diambars FC, said he was not surprised by the player’s reaction. He described Sylla as a footballer with a strong mentality who refuses to give up and continues fighting until the end.

From Diambars to Belgium

Sylla joined the renowned Senegalese academy Diambars FC several years ago, where his potential and character quickly became clear. The academy identified in him the qualities described in Senegalese football as “dem ba diekh” the determination to go all the way.

His next step took him to FC Pau, where he played for the club’s second team. He then moved to Norway to join Lyn 1896 FK, a spell that helped attract the attention of Union Saint-Gilloise’s scouts.

The Belgian club signed Sylla in January 2026. Since then, the tall defender has continued to develop and establish himself in a more demanding environment.

He stands 1.96m tall and has made 15 appearances in all competitions at the start of this season. Those matches have brought him one goal and two assists, figures that underline his growing contribution beyond his defensive duties.

Seck believes Sylla is ready to take another step forward in his young career. The Diambars president’s confidence is based not only on the player’s physical attributes and technical ability, but also on the resilience he has repeatedly shown on the pitch.

Sylla’s response against Cercle Bruges offered the clearest example so far. After the own goal, he remained involved in the contest and played a decisive part in Union Saint-Gilloise’s five-goal victory.

Union Saint-Gilloise will next face SK Beveren in the 10th round of the Belgian championship.
