Marseille rejected Atletico Madrid and Betis offer for Aubameyang in January
Gabon star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was the subject of serious transfer interest during the January window, with both Real Betis and Atletico Madrid making attempts to sign the Olympique de Marseille striker.
The Spanish clubs were keen to bring in the experienced Gabon international as they explored attacking reinforcements mid-season. Aubameyang’s proven pedigree in European football made him an attractive option for both sides, particularly given his availability and situation at Marseille.
However, despite the concrete interest, the move never materialised.
Marseille’s hierarchy, led at the time by former president Pablo Longoria, made the decision to block any potential departure. The club opted to retain the 36-year-old forward, viewing him as an important figure in their squad structure for the remainder of the season.
Aubameyang’s form has been mixed throughout the campaign, with the striker scoring nine goals in 28 Ligue 1 appearances. His most recent outing—a 1-1 draw against OGC Nice—reflected a broader struggle for consistency in front of goal.
Behind the scenes, there were suggestions that the player could have been open to a change, particularly amid Marseille’s ongoing internal instability and fluctuating performances on the pitch. But the club remained firm in their stance, rejecting approaches from both La Liga sides.
Betis and Atlético Madrid ultimately had to look elsewhere, as Marseille shut the door on a mid-season exit for one of their most experienced forwards.
Now staying put until at least the end of the campaign, Aubameyang remains part of a Marseille side still searching for stability and sharper form as the season enters its decisive phase.
