Marc Guehi downplays remarkable Liverpool record

Marc Guehi has taken his stunning record against Liverpool in stride after celebrating a fifth win over the Reds this season.

The defender, who was close to joining Liverpool last summer, has instead turned into one of their toughest opponents.

Three of those victories came while he was captaining Crystal Palace, before his January move to Manchester City added two more, including Saturday’s dominant 4-0 FA Cup quarter-final win. Despite the storyline, Guehi was keen not to make it about himself.

“It’s not me! It’s just a coincidence, to be honest,” he told TNT Sports when asked about his perfect record. He stressed that he is simply trying to savour every opportunity at the top level. “You have to enjoy it, it’s not a long career, so that’s what I’m trying to do.”

Guehi also echoed Pep Guardiola’s message about timing and mentality. “It was a good win. The manager always says it is important to arrive at the right time. At the end of the season, there are big games and big moments, and we did that today against Liverpool.”

Facing a “big team” packed with “big players”, Guehi said City had to “suffer together” and embrace the challenge, turning another test into another statement performance.
