Manchester United are advancing towards the signing of Atalanta midfielder Ederson as their interest in Senegal international Pape Gueye appears to have cooled, according to reports.

The Premier League club had recently been linked with a move for African champion Pape Gueye, with some sources suggesting that United were prepared to pay as much as €50 million for the midfielder.

However, the situation now appears to have shifted as the club refocuses its plans for midfield reinforcements.

United, who are understood to be planning for changes in the squad under manager Michael Carrick, are now prioritising alternative targets as they look to reshape their midfield options following Casemiro’s long-term role at the club.

Journalist Matteo Moretto reports that Manchester United have stepped up their pursuit of Ederson, who has also attracted attention from elsewhere in Europe. The 26-year-old has been identified as a key target as the club looks to strengthen ahead of the new season.

Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton was also previously under consideration, but United have reportedly made more concrete progress in their efforts to secure Ederson’s signature.

According to the same reports, Ederson has already agreed in principle to a move to England, with discussions between the clubs progressing positively.

Atalanta are believed to value the midfielder in the region of €50 million to €60 million, reflecting his importance to the squad.

The Brazilian midfielder has been a key figure for Atalanta since joining the club from Salernitana four years ago, developing into one of their most consistent performers in Serie A.

While interest in Pape Gueye remains part of earlier transfer discussions, Manchester United are now understood to be focusing their attention on completing a deal for Ederson as they move closer to finalising their midfield recruitment plans.
