Manchester United re-assessing Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba as agents renew transfer talks

Carlos Baleba’s representatives have re-established contact with Manchester United as the Brighton midfielder explores a possible move to Old Trafford before the end of the summer transfer window.

The Cameroon international, 22, is understood to remain keen on joining the Premier League club, with his camp sounding out whether United are prepared to revive a pursuit that stalled a year ago.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, discussions have resumed between United and Baleba’s entourage to gauge the feasibility of a transfer in the coming weeks, rather than to negotiate a deal at this stage.

United had identified Baleba as a priority target last summer to strengthen their midfield and reached an agreement in principle on personal terms with the player. However, Brighton refused to sanction his departure, effectively cutting off talks between the clubs and ending United’s push.

United’s defensive midfield search

Interest from Old Trafford appeared to cool following the departure of Ruben Amorim, whose exit had shifted recruitment plans and slowed work on targets previously highlighted under his influence.

Despite that, United’s need for a defensive midfielder has remained, and Baleba’s profile is once again being examined as part of their options in that position. His representatives are now seeking clarity on whether United are ready to return with a renewed attempt to sign him.

No bid has been reported, and there is no indication yet that Brighton’s stance has softened since last summer, when they were not prepared to lose a player they regard as an important part of their squad.

Brighton stance and financial considerations

Baleba is under contract at Brighton until 30 June 2028, a long-term deal that places the south-coast club in a strong position should formal negotiations begin.

He is considered a key member of the Seagulls’ squad and his value reflects that status. The midfielder is currently listed at €55m on Transfermarkt, a figure that would be a significant factor in any talks if United decide to advance their interest and make an offer.

The former Lille player’s financial package at Brighton is also substantial. Baleba’s annual salary stands at €756,162, equivalent to 491,505,300 FCFA, and any move to Old Trafford would be expected to involve a considerable upgrade on those terms.

For now, the initiative has come from the player’s camp rather than from the clubs. Baleba’s entourage want to establish whether Manchester United are prepared to “come back strong” in the market for him, having previously identified him as a key solution in defensive midfield.

With the transfer window heading into its final weeks, the situation places Baleba among the names to watch if United step up their search for midfield reinforcements, while Brighton hold contractual and financial leverage over any potential deal.
