Manchester United held by Tottenham after late Rodrigo Bentancur dismissal

Manchester United were denied a second Premier League win of the campaign as Tottenham Hotspur fought back to draw 1-1 at Old Trafford on Saturday evening, despite finishing the match with 10 men.

Michael Carrick’s side surrendered a lead they had taken in the 73rd minute, with Dominic Solanke’s late header cancelling out Bryan Mbeumo’s opener and earning Tottenham a point.

United endured a difficult first half, as Tottenham’s intense pressing prevented the hosts from settling into their usual rhythm. Senne Lammens was called upon to keep his side level, saving from Solanke, while Mohammed Kudus sent a shot narrowly wide.

Conor Gallagher also tested Lammens as frustration grew among the home supporters. Amad Diallo provided one of United’s few notable attacking moments before the interval, but Tottenham looked the more effective team for long periods.

The game became more open after the break and Tottenham thought they had taken the lead in the 56th minute. Youri Tielemans appeared to finish a scoring move, but the goal was ruled out after officials determined the ball had gone out of play before the attack was completed.

United then made the breakthrough when Matheus Cunha drove into the penalty area before setting up Mbeumo. The forward slid the ball into the net to score his third goal of the season, giving the home side what looked to be a decisive advantage.

Tottenham’s task became harder when Rodrigo Bentancur was shown a red card. The midfielder headbutted Luke Shaw after the Manchester United defender reacted angrily to a challenge, leaving referee Stuart Attwell with no option but to dismiss him.

However, Tottenham continued to threaten despite being reduced to 10 players. The visitors pushed forward late on and were rewarded when Solanke rose to meet a cross, directing a powerful header beyond Lammens to level the score.

The draw means United were unable to take all three points despite leading with a numerical advantage in the closing stages. They remain 12th in the Premier League table.

Tottenham’s point lifted them off the bottom of the standings, although their hopes of securing a first win of the campaign were also frustrated.
