Manchester United confirm Carlos Baleba signing after lengthy Brighton negotiations
Manchester United have announced the signing of Cameroon midfielder Carlos Baleba from Brighton, bringing an end to a prolonged summer transfer negotiation.
The Premier League club confirmed the agreement on their official website, saying it was “subject to registration formalities”. That process must be completed before Baleba can officially make his Manchester United debut.
Baleba, 22, has signed a contract running until June 2031. The deal also includes an option allowing Manchester United to extend his stay by a further season.
The midfielder joins after establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s leading performers in his position during his time at Brighton. He played 31 league matches for the club last season and was an important part of the side that secured a place in the UEFA Conference League.
Manchester United said Baleba ranked sixth among Premier League midfielders during the 2024-25 season for his combined total of tackles and interceptions. He was also fourth for carrying the ball forward per 90 minutes.
His defensive numbers placed him among the top 8% of Premier League players for combined tackles and interceptions last season. He was in the top 1% for recovering second balls, underlining the strength of his contribution both without possession and during transitions.
Baleba’s performances helped Brighton finish in a position that earned qualification for the UEFA Conference League. His move to Old Trafford is intended to strengthen Manchester United’s midfield ahead of the new campaign, with the club hoping he can become a significant addition to the side.
The announcement concludes a lengthy period of negotiations between Manchester United and Brighton. Baleba’s arrival gives the Red Devils another midfield option as they prepare for the new season, although his registration must still be completed before he is available to play.
