Ghana’s Mohammed Salisu starts for Monaco for the first time in 285 days in win over CSKA Sofia
Ghana defender Mohammed Salisu has taken a significant step in his recovery from a serious knee injury after making his first start in 285 days.
It came during AS Monaco’s 2-1 away victory over PFC CSKA Sofia on Thursday in the UEFA Conference League.
The 27-year-old centre-back returned to Monaco’s starting line-up for the European fixture, completing 60 minutes before being substituted as he gradually builds his match fitness.
Salisu delivered a solid defensive performance in Bulgaria, recording seven clearances and two recoveries to help the French side secure an important victory.
His return to the starting XI marks another milestone in a lengthy rehabilitation process after he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in January 2026.
The injury kept the Ghana international out of action for 258 days before he made his first-team comeback last month, appearing as a late substitute in Monaco’s Ligue 1 encounter against RC Lens.
Having taken his first steps back through a brief cameo, Salisu has now progressed to starting a competitive fixture, offering encouragement to both Monaco and Ghana.
The defender will be eager to regain full fitness and establish himself as a regular member of Monaco’s backline as the season progresses.
His return also provides a timely boost for the Black Stars, with the centre-back’s experience and defensive qualities potentially valuable to Ghana’s international ambitions.
Salisu’s immediate priority, however, will be to build on his latest appearance and maintain his progress without further setbacks.
