Manchester United boss Michael Carrick reveals Carlos Baleba return timeline

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick says new signing Carlos Baleba could return to training in two or three weeks after suffering a minor ankle problem.

Baleba joined Manchester United on a five-season contract running until 2031, with the club holding an option to extend the agreement by a further year. However, the midfielder will have to wait before beginning work with his new team because of the injury.

Speaking at his pre-match news conference, Carrick said: “Baleba has a minor ankle problem and may return to action in two or three weeks.”

The United manager said the issue had been known about before the player’s arrival and was not considered a major concern.

“We were aware of that beforehand, so it is not a big problem,” Carrick added. “It will be great to have him with us when the circumstances allow.”

Baleba was described by Carrick as an exciting addition to the squad, with the manager highlighting the qualities he believes the Cameroon international can bring to the team.

“He has tremendous potential, really,” said Carrick. “He is a very exciting addition for us.”

He added: “The quality he possesses and the attributes he has add balance to the group we already have. They give us different combinations.”

United are preparing for their first home match of the season, when they will face newly promoted Ipswich Town at Old Trafford.

Carrick’s side began the campaign in disappointing fashion last week, losing 2-0 away to Hull City. The manager is now looking for a response in front of the home supporters.

“We are really looking forward to our first home game of the season,” he said. “We suffered a setback last week and want to return to our usual level and start winning games.”

Carrick believes he has a strong squad available for the match and said a number of different line-ups were possible.

“We have a strong team and can choose from various formations,” he said. “All the players are strong contenders to play.”

There will, however, be at least one confirmed absence. Amad Diallo will not be involved this week and is expected to be out for slightly longer.

Mason Mount, meanwhile, has returned to the group and trained during the week, providing a positive development for United ahead of the Ipswich game.

“Amad Diallo will not play this week,” Carrick said. “He will be out for a little longer, while Mount has returned to the group and trained this week, which is very positive for us.”

The fixture with Ipswich will be United’s first opportunity to play at Old Trafford this season after their opening match ended in defeat away from home. Carrick will hope his side can produce an improved performance while Baleba continues his recovery ahead of a potential first appearance for the club.
