Barcelona open to Jules Kounde sale

Barcelona find themselves at a transfer crossroads as Premier League heavyweights Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea intensify their pursuit of French international defender Jules Koundé.

Despite the 27-year-old being a fundamental pillar of Hansi Flick’s tactical setup, reports from Mundo Deportivo suggest the Catalan giants may be forced to consider a high-profile sale to balance their precarious financial accounts ahead of the 2026 summer window.

Manchester City’s interest in Koundé is longstanding. Pep Guardiola has tracked the defender since his time at Sevilla, valuing his elite ball-playing ability and rare versatility to transition seamlessly between center-back and right-back.

With City looking to refresh their defensive rotations, Koundé is viewed as a primary target who fits the Premier League’s physical demands while maintaining the technical proficiency required at the Etihad.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are reportedly ready to reignite a pursuit that dates back to 2022. Having missed out on the Frenchman when he originally chose Barcelona, the London club remains keen on his profile as they continue to overhaul their squad.

Internal reports suggest Chelsea’s recruitment team views Koundé as a “missing piece” in their defensive line, offering the recovery pace and tactical intelligence that has defined his tenure in La Liga.

Liverpool, on the other hand, are reportedly leading the interest and could be willing to meet the €80m asking price as they seek defensive stability on the flank.

The situation remains complex for Barcelona. Koundé recently committed his future to the club, signing a contract extension through June 2030 that includes a symbolic €1 billion release clause.

He has publicly stated he has no intention of leaving the Spotify Camp Nou, where he has become one of the league’s most consistent performers.

However, Barcelona’s board is reportedly “on alert.” While they have no sporting desire to lose Koundé, an offer in the region of €80 million (£70m) could be impossible to ignore.

Such a windfall would allow the club to comply with La Liga’s stringent “1:1” spending rules and potentially fund moves for other priority targets.
