Mamelodi Sundowns triggers Miguel Cardoso’s contract extension clause
Mamelodi Sundowns have moved to secure continuity at the helm by activating a contract option that will keep head coach Miguel Cardoso at Chloorkop for another season.
Cardoso’s original deal was due to expire at the end of June, but the club acted decisively in the wake of a landmark campaign that delivered the CAF Champions League title — only the second continental crown in Sundowns’ history.
The Portuguese tactician, who arrived in December 2024, guided the Brazilians to long-awaited African glory, ending years of near misses in the continent’s premier club competition.
The achievement came despite Sundowns losing their domestic league crown to Orlando Pirates, who ended the club’s eight-year stranglehold on the title.
Even so, the continental success significantly strengthened Cardoso’s standing within the club, where Champions League glory has remained a defining ambition given the scale of investment in the squad over the years. The victory also marked Sundowns’ first African title since 2016.
The extension is seen as a move to preserve stability heading into the 2026/27 season, with Sundowns aiming to consolidate their continental breakthrough while reclaiming domestic dominance.
In 84 matches since his appointment 542 days ago, Cardoso has recorded 53 wins, 19 draws and 12 defeats, a run that has also seen him reach three consecutive CAF Champions League finals — with previous success at Espérance de Tunis before lifting the trophy with Sundowns.
His strong record had reportedly drawn interest from Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly, who recently parted ways with coach Jess Thorup.
Meanwhile, Sundowns have also moved to secure squad continuity. Club captain Themba Zwane has signed a one-year extension, while options have been activated for Thapelo Morena, Bathusi Aubaas and Terrence Mashego.
