Mamelodi Sundowns secure Thato Sibiya’s future before Lille loan

Mamelodi Sundowns have secured the future of Thato Sibiya by handing the 20-year-old defender a new long-term contract before allowing him to join French Ligue 1 club Lille OSC on loan.

Lille confirmed the arrival of the South African youth international on Wednesday. Sibiya has moved to France on a season-long loan, with the agreement including an option for Lille to buy him at the end of the spell.

The decision means Sundowns have protected their investment in one of their emerging players while giving him the opportunity to continue his development in European football.

Sibiya attracted interest from clubs outside South Africa after breaking into the Mamelodi Sundowns first-team squad. He also represented South Africa’s U20 side at both the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA U20 World Cup.

His move to Lille had prompted speculation that he might have played his final match for the Brazilians. Sundowns, however, acted before completing the loan agreement by extending his commitment to the club.

“Mamelodi Sundowns are pleased to announce that Thato Sibiya has signed a new long-term contract with the club,” Sundowns said in a statement.

“Mamelodi Sundowns have also reached an agreement with French Ligue 1 side LOSC Lille for Thato to join the club on a season-long loan.

“We wish Thato all the best for the season ahead and his next challenge in France.”

Sundowns did not reveal the precise duration of Sibiya’s new contract. The club has nevertheless developed a reputation for tying promising young players to lengthy agreements, helping to retain control over their futures as they gain experience.

Sibiya has already reported for duty in France and is expected to begin his Lille career with the club’s reserve side. The arrangement will allow him to become familiar with his new environment as he works towards establishing himself in European football.

The loan represents the next stage of a rapid rise for Sibiya, who has progressed from Sundowns’ youth structure into first-team contention and international football with South Africa’s U20 team. His performances at youth level, including appearances at two major continental and global tournaments, helped attract attention from abroad.

For Sundowns, the new contract ensures that Sibiya’s development in France takes place with his long-term position at the South African club clearly defined. For Lille, the season-long move provides an opportunity to assess the defender in its system before deciding whether to activate the option to buy.
