Mamelodi Sundowns’ lead cut to one point as Orlando Pirates close in on PSL summit

The PSL title race has been blown wide open, with Mamelodi Sundowns’ once-commanding advantage reduced to just one point heading into the international break.

Sundowns remain top with 20 points from eight matches, but Orlando Pirates have moved to 19 points with a game in hand after beating Marumo Gallants 2-0 on Sunday.

Pirates close the gap

Sundowns were seven points clear at the summit just two weeks ago, but that cushion has rapidly disappeared as the Buccaneers continue to apply pressure.

The Brazilians missed league action over the weekend because of their FIFA Intercontinental Cup fixture against Al Ahli on Saturday.

That opened the door for Pirates to make significant ground, and they took full advantage at home against Gallants.

Kabelo Kgosietsile and Nkosinathi Sibisi were on target as the Buccaneers secured a 2-0 victory, leaving them just one point behind Sundowns.

More importantly, Pirates have played one game fewer than their title rivals, putting them in a strong position to overtake Sundowns when the league resumes.

The fixture congestion could make the race even more intriguing, with the two clubs also scheduled to meet in the MTN8 final on October 10.

Both sides will additionally have continental commitments to navigate, potentially making squad depth and consistency crucial in the coming weeks.

AmaZulu strengthen their challenge

While the leading duo battle for first place, AmaZulu are quietly building a strong case for a place among the contenders.

Usuthu climbed to third after beating Polokwane City away on Saturday, taking their tally to 16 points from seven matches.

They are now only three points behind Pirates and have a game in hand on Sundowns, leaving them within touching distance of the top two.

Kaizer Chiefs, meanwhile, dropped further behind after being held to a goalless draw by Golden Arrows on Sunday.

The result leaves the Amakhosi fourth with 13 points from seven matches, four points behind AmaZulu and seven adrift of Sundowns.

Their position has already raised questions about whether Chiefs can mount a serious title challenge, particularly with Milford FC and Sekhukhune United also close behind.

One point separates Sundowns and Pirates

The latest standings have set up what could become one of the tightest PSL title races in recent years.
