Mamelodi Sundowns is the ‘pillar of South African football’ after CAF Champions League triumph – Itumeleng Khune

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has described Mamelodi Sundowns as the “pillar of South African football” following their CAF Champions League success.

The Pretoria-based side were held to a 1-1 draw by ASFAR in the second leg of the final, but that result was enough to secure a second continental crown. Teboho Mokoena restored parity for Sundowns before half-time after Mohamed Rabie Hrimat had opened the scoring for the Moroccan side.

Despite facing intense pressure from the hosts and a hostile atmosphere in the stands, Sundowns showed resilience to see out the result and clinch the title.

Speaking after the match on SABC, Khune praised the achievement and highlighted the broader impact of the club on national football.

“It was a well-deserved victory,” he said. “They deserve to lift the trophy. They are the pillar of South African football, and they have represented us very well in this continental football showcase.”

He added that Sundowns’ success is also benefiting the national team.

“I think that’s why even Bafana Bafana is benefiting from Mamelodi Sundowns players.”

The triumph earns Sundowns a reported $6 million in prize money and secures qualification for the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup, the 2026 FIFA Intercontinental Cup, and the 2026 CAF Super Cup.

The newly crowned African champions returned to South Africa on Monday evening, arriving at OR Tambo International Airport to a warm reception.
