CAF Champions League: Simba SC complete ruthless 7-1 aggregate win over Wanderers

Tanzanian giants Simba SC have advanced to the next round of the CAF Champions League after thrashing Malawi’s Mighty Wanderers 6-1 in the second leg of their preliminary round tie.

The emphatic victory at Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Sunday completed a 7-1 aggregate triumph for Simba, ending Wanderers’ continental campaign at the first hurdle.

Simba had already secured a 1-0 victory in the first leg at Bingu National Stadium last weekend and produced an even more dominant display on home soil.

Chama strikes twice as Simba take control

Simba made their intentions clear within seven minutes when Clatous Chama capitalised on a defensive error from Wanderers to give the hosts an early advantage.

Libasse Gueye doubled Simba’s lead in the 27th minute before Chama struck again seven minutes later to complete his brace and put the Tanzanian side firmly in control.

Mighty Wanderers coach responded with a triple substitution, bringing on Sama Thierry, Clement Nyondo and Mphatso Kamanga in place of Lameck Mithi, Promise Kamwendo and captain Emmanuel Nyirenda.

The changes briefly gave the Malawian side hope when Nyondo was brought down inside the box in first-half stoppage time.

Isaac Kaliati converted the resulting penalty to reduce the deficit to 3-1 before the break.

Simba complete emphatic victory

Any prospect of a Wanderers comeback disappeared after the interval as Simba continued to dominate.

A costly mistake by Wanderers goalkeeper Dalitso Nkhungwa allowed Gueye to score his second goal of the match in the 68th minute, restoring Simba’s three-goal advantage.

The Tanzanian side continued to press for more and substitute Keletso Makgalwa added a fifth in the 87th minute.

Morice Abraham then completed the rout deep into stoppage time to give Simba a 6-1 victory on the night.

Wanderers exit at first hurdle

The result brings Mighty Wanderers’ CAF Champions League campaign to an abrupt end, with the Malawian club suffering a 7-1 aggregate defeat.

Simba SC, meanwhile, progress to the next stage of Africa’s premier club competition after a commanding performance across both legs.
