Mamelodi Sundowns final fixture date moved as title charge nears climax

Mamelodi Sundowns’ pursuit of a record-extending ninth consecutive Betway Premiership title has been shaped by a significant scheduling adjustment, with the club confirming a change to their final league fixture date as the season reaches its decisive stage.

The Tshwane giants, who lead the standings on 64 points and hold a five-point cushion over second-placed Orlando Pirates, remain firmly in control of their destiny.

With three matches left, they can secure the title by maintaining maximum points, underlining their dominance in what has been another commanding domestic campaign.

Their closing sequence begins with a high-profile encounter against Kaizer Chiefs at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday, 6 May at 19:30, before returning home to host Siwelele FC at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday, 9 May at 17:30. The run then concludes away to TS Galaxy at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday, 12 May at 19:30.

Originally, that final fixture was scheduled for 16 May, but it has now been brought forward due to Sundowns’ participation in the CAF Champions League final. The adjustment ensures alignment with their continental commitments, compressing an already demanding schedule.

Across this period, Sundowns are set to play seven matches within just 21 days, a workload that highlights the physical and tactical strain of competing on multiple fronts.

Their altered league calendar also means they will not feature in the final round of Premiership fixtures on 23 May, where simultaneous kick-offs are traditionally used to maintain competitive balance.

If results unfold in their favour, Sundowns could potentially clinch the title under the Mbombela floodlights against TS Galaxy. However, the championship race could conclude even earlier should Orlando Pirates drop points in their remaining fixtures.

Beyond domestic ambitions, Sundowns will quickly shift focus to their CAF Champions League final against AS FAR. The first leg is scheduled for Sunday, 17 May in Pretoria, followed by the decisive return leg in Rabat on Sunday, 24 May.
