Mali star Aliou Dieng eyes Champions League football after Valencia switch
Former Al Ahly midfielder Aliou Dieng has set his sights on helping Valencia return to the UEFA Champions League after recently sealing a move to the club.
The Mali international recently completed a permanent transfer to Valencia, signing a contract that will keep him at the Mestalla until 2028, with an option to extend for a further year.
After fulfilling his long-held dream of moving to European football, the 28-year-old said he is determined to adapt quickly to life in La Liga and repay the faith shown in him by the club.
Speaking after his arrival, Dieng admitted that competing in the UEFA Champions League remains one of his biggest career ambitions but stressed that his immediate priority is to settle into his new surroundings and follow the guidance of the coaching staff.
“Playing in the Champions League is a personal ambition. I come from a great club and now I have joined Valencia, which is also a great club, but I have to follow the coach’s instructions and take things step by step.”
Dieng also addressed the competition for places in Valencia’s midfield, insisting he is not taking anything for granted despite the expectations surrounding his arrival.
The former Al Ahly star revealed that he has already spoken with the coach, who expressed confidence in his abilities, but acknowledged that earning a place in the starting XI will depend entirely on his performances in training and on the pitch.
“I spoke with the coach and he told me that he expects a lot from me. Whether I start or not is his decision. My focus is on working hard and adapting to the coach’s style as quickly as possible.”
Known for his tireless work rate and disciplined displays in midfield, Dieng said he intends to remain grounded as he begins the next chapter of his career in Spain.
“I am a simple player. I listen to the coach and my teammates, and I do everything I can on the pitch to give my best for this club that has placed its trust in me.”
The Malian international reiterated his determination to help restore Valencia to Europe’s elite, pointing to the winning mentality he developed during his successful spell at Al Ahly, where he won numerous domestic and continental honours.
“I come from a club that has won many titles in Africa, and my ambition is to help Valencia return to where it belongs and compete in the Champions League.”
Dieng also reflected on finally achieving his childhood ambition of playing in Europe, revealing that several previous opportunities had failed to materialise before Valencia made the move that changed his career.
“I have dreamed of playing in Europe since I was a child. I had several opportunities that did not happen, but thanks to the efforts of many people and the club, that dream has now become a reality.”
“Valencia is not just an ordinary club. I believe this will be the perfect start to my European career.”
Having established himself as one of Africa’s top midfielders during his time at Al Ahly, Dieng will now be aiming to make a similar impact in Spain as he begins a new chapter with Valencia and pursues his dream of competing at the highest level of European football.
