Malcom praises ‘genuine’ Al Hilal fans after Saudi move ends

Malcom appeared visibly upset when asked about Al Hilal following his departure from the Saudi club, with a video of the exchange circulating widely online.

The Brazil international left Al Hilal only a few days ago after agreeing to terminate his contract by mutual consent. His initial preference had been to remain with the club, which he joined in the summer of 2023.

Malcom subsequently moved to Al Jazira in the United Arab Emirates and, only a few hours later, helped his new side beat Sharjah 2-0 in a domestic league match. After the game, he was seen speaking to a group of supporters outside the stadium.

During the interaction, one fan asked Malcom to send a message to Al Hilal supporters. His expression changed noticeably as the question was put to him, and he appeared to show signs of sadness.

Malcom replied: “I love the genuine fans of Al Hilal.”

The comment appeared to indicate that the forward had experienced difficulties with a significant section of Al Hilal’s support during his time in Riyadh. His words also suggested a distinction between the supporters he felt had continued to back him and those who had criticised him.

Malcom faced several confrontations with Al Hilal fans, particularly during his second season at the club. Supporters repeatedly voiced their frustration and anger from the stands as the team struggled to produce the expected results in domestic and Asian competitions.

Reports in the Saudi media have stated that the deterioration in Malcom’s relationship with the club’s supporters was the main reason behind his departure.

The Brazilian’s exit came despite his reported desire to continue with Al Hilal. Instead, an agreement was reached to end his contract amicably, allowing him to join Al Jazira.

The video was shared online after the supporter asked: “What do you say to the Al Hilal fans who love you?” Malcom then answered: “The genuine Al Hilal fans? I love them too.”

His response quickly drew attention because of the visible change in his demeanour and the timing of the footage, which emerged soon after his move away from the Saudi club.

Malcom’s arrival at Al Jazira was followed almost immediately by his first appearance for the UAE side. He played in the 2-0 victory over Sharjah before meeting fans outside the ground, providing the setting for the exchange that has since been widely circulated.

The forward’s comments have renewed focus on his difficult final period at Al Hilal, where the relationship between the player and parts of the fanbase had become increasingly strained.
