Mailula says lack of clear role behind failed KV Kortrijk loan

Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Cassius Mailula says his loan spell at KV Kortrijk failed because the Belgian club did not have a clear plan for how to use him.

The 25-year-old joined the Jupiler Pro League side in 2025 from Toronto FC but struggled to secure regular playing time before returning to the Brazilians.

Mailula believes clubs must understand a player’s strengths and know how they intend to use him before signing him.

“From my perspective, I think it’s a matter of a club having a plan around you,” Mailula said on Metro FM.

“It’s about knowing when they want you, how are they going to use you because they know my qualities before I come to the club.

“For me it’s about that also if you use me, use me to my strength. That’s it, the rest, you can never doubt the talent.

“It was just the matter of getting that opportunity and for me to grab it.”

The forward said he was disappointed by how his time in Belgium unfolded, given the opportunity to play abroad had been something he had wanted.

“Yeah, of course [I was sad], every player wants to do well,” he added.

“When you are in an environment where this is what you’ve always wanted, you want to show the world that and give the club that brought you there something.”
