Former Algerian national coach Madjid Bougherra, who had been linked with the Algerian coaching position before the appointment of Swiss coach Vladimir Petrovic, is thriving in his current role at Al-Markhiya Sports Club in Qatar.
After concluding his tenure as the coach of Algeria’s A’ team last October, where he guided the squad to the final of the CHAN TotalEnergies 2022, Bougherra sought fresh challenges in Qatar.
His expertise has found a home with Al-Markhiya SC, and he clarified that the rumors about his potential return to Algeria were unfounded.
“I wanted to get back to work on a daily basis. I’m still a young coach and I really need to learn more.
The experience as an assistant alongside Djamel Belmadi with the Greens and especially with the A’ selection enriched me enormously. But at the end of CHAN, I really had this desire to return to the field on a daily basis,” expressed Bougherra.
Contrary to rumors, Bougherra stated that there were no contacts regarding the Algerian coaching positions. “Everyone knows that I am committed to my club,” he emphasized.
Bougherra embraced a challenging role by taking charge of Al-Markhiya SC, the bottom-placed team in the Qatari Ligue 1.
Despite their current standing, a recent victory against league leaders Al Wakrah has injected hope into the club, and Bougherra remains optimistic about the future.
“The objective is to stay in this club and build something. It’s true that they weren’t the players I wanted, but I managed to take some elements from my old club when I had the U23s in hand.
We aim to grow the club with a two-year contract, and we have excellent facilities and working resources. We want to grow, and that’s the project that excites me with my staff and my team,” stated Bougherra.
While focused on his current coaching responsibilities, Bougherra acknowledged that the national team remains in the back of his mind.
Having enjoyed success with the Algeria A’ team, winning the FIFA Arab Nations Cup in 2021, Bougherra’s impressive coaching record and accomplishments position him as a potential future candidate for the national coaching role.
However, for now, he remains dedicated to the day-to-day challenges and growth objectives with Al-Markhiya SC.
