Lyle Foster joins Houston Dynamo on loan from Burnley

Bafana Bafana striker Lyle Foster has joined Houston Dynamo on loan from Burnley, with the Major League Soccer club keeping him in Texas until the end of June 2027.

The deal, confirmed on Thursday, includes an option for Houston Dynamo to make the 26-year-old’s move permanent.

Foster’s transfer gives him the chance to revive his club career after falling out of favour at Burnley following their relegation from the Premier League. He made 26 Premier League appearances last season, scoring three goals and providing two assists, but was not included in Burnley’s plans as they began life back in the Championship.

Houston Dynamo have moved to offer the South Africa international a fresh opportunity and add further experience to their squad. The club are currently second in the Western Conference and will hope Foster can help strengthen their challenge during the remainder of the season.

Dynamo president of soccer Pat Onstad pointed to Foster’s ability to attack the space behind defensive lines, connect play and contribute without the ball through his work rate.

The striker arrives in MLS after four seasons with Burnley, during which he made 89 league appearances across the Premier League and Championship. He helped the club win promotion to the Premier League twice and became an important part of the Bafana Bafana squad.

Foster’s move also adds to the growing South African presence in the United States’ top flight. He will be reunited with fellow internationals Puso Dithejane and Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who are both with Chicago Fire.

Dithejane and Mbokazi moved to the United States in 2026 through the MLS Under-22 Initiative. Dithejane has already scored his first MLS goal, against Inter Miami, and was named Chicago Fire’s Player of the Month for July-August.

Mbokazi has established himself in Chicago’s defence since moving from Orlando Pirates.

Their presence could help Foster settle into his new surroundings, while the transfer may also carry significance for South Africa at international level. Foster was part of the country’s 2026 World Cup campaign and started the opening match against Mexico as Bafana Bafana reached the knockout stage for the first time in their history.

His next chapter will begin as South Africa enters a new era under coach Pitso Mosimane. Regular football at Houston Dynamo would give Foster the opportunity to regain the form that made him one of Bafana Bafana’s leading attacking options.

The move represents a change in direction for a forward who had been unable to secure a regular role at Burnley after their return to the Championship. Houston Dynamo will now be hoping his Premier League background, international experience and record of helping Burnley earn promotion can translate into a strong impact in MLS.

Together with Dithejane and Mbokazi, Foster becomes part of an expanding group of South African players competing in the American top flight.
