Lyle Foster agrees surprise loan move to Houston Dynamo from Burnley

South Africa striker Lyle Foster is set to join Major League Soccer side Houston Dynamo on a season-long loan from Burnley, with an option to make the transfer permanent for more than £6m.

The agreement brings an unexpected end to Foster’s time at the relegated English Championship club, despite interest in the 25-year-old from teams in Turkey, France and Germany during the past month.

Those clubs had been alerted that Foster was likely to leave Burnley, but sources have confirmed that a move to the United States of America was his preferred destination. The country recently hosted the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Burnley have now reached an agreement with Houston Dynamo over a loan deal that includes a purchase option worth in excess of £6m. Foster is expected to continue his career in Major League Soccer as he looks to rebuild the form that previously earned him a move to England.

Foster joined Burnley from Belgian club Westerlo in 2023 in a transfer worth £11m. He leaves after making 99 appearances for the club, scoring 12 goals and providing 12 assists.

His departure also comes at an important stage of his international career. Foster has won 28 caps for South Africa, scoring 10 goals and supplying three assists. He is expected to remain an important member of the Bafana Bafana squad under newly appointed head coach Pitso Mosimane.

The move to Houston is viewed as significant for Foster as he seeks regular football and aims to retain his place in the South Africa set-up. His form at Burnley had helped establish him as one of the leading attacking options available to the national side, and a change of environment is now expected to give him the opportunity to regain that level.

Foster will become the latest South African player in Major League Soccer. He will join Puso Dithajane, Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Tylon Smith in the league.

His spell at Burnley began after his move from Westerlo in 2023, but the club’s relegation has prompted a change in direction for the striker. Rather than pursuing one of the European opportunities reported in recent weeks, Foster has chosen a move to the United States, where Houston Dynamo will provide the next stage of his career.

The agreement is initially for one season, while the option to complete a permanent transfer gives Houston Dynamo the possibility of securing Foster’s services beyond the loan period.
