Ransford Konigsdorffer earns first Mainz start against Bayern Munich
Ghanaian international Ransford Konigsdorffer was rewarded for his recent performances with a place in Mainz 05’s starting lineup for Saturday’s Bundesliga encounter against Bayern Munich.
Head coach Urs Fischer handed the forward his first start of the campaign, replacing Phillip Tietz as Mainz looked to introduce additional pace into their attacking setup.
Speaking to Sky Sports before kick-off, Fischer explained that the decision was not purely tactical but also recognition of the striker’s contributions in recent weeks.
“He had to wait behind for eight games,” the Swiss tactician said, referring to Königsdörffer’s previous appearances as a substitute.
Despite limited starting opportunities, the 25-year-old had made an impact, registering two goals and providing an assist during his appearances from the bench.
Fischer believes the summer signing from Hamburger SV had earned his opportunity through hard work and consistent performances.
The Mainz manager also highlighted the importance of having additional speed in attack against Bayern, explaining that his side needed an attacking outlet rather than focusing exclusively on defending.
Königsdörffer was therefore selected alongside Sheraldo Becker to provide pace and threaten Bayern during counterattacking situations.
