Luka Modric extends AC Milan contract after fans convince him to stay
Luka Modric says the love and support shown by AC Milan supporters was the main reason behind his decision to extend his contract with the Italian club until the summer of 2027.
The Croatia midfielder, who joined Milan last season, has confirmed he will remain at San Siro for another campaign. His priority, he says, is to help the club win silverware.
“The club and the fans showed me a lot of love, and supported me in every way, and that was the main reason behind my decision to stay,” Modric told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The 40-year-old said he had always expected to continue for another year, but deliberately waited before committing his future.
“I always intended to continue for another year, and I could have signed the contract extension in December, but I preferred to listen to my body,” he said.
“In the end, I received the answer I was hoping for. I am still in good shape, I still have the passion and everything needed to continue.”
Modric joined Milan with the ambition of adding trophies to the club’s honours list and says that objective has not changed.
“When I first joined Milan, I said I wanted to win trophies with this club, and that is still my dream,” he said.
“I hope to win trophies in the Milan shirt, whether that is the Italian league or any other competition.”
“My dream has not changed, and that is why I came here.”
Modric made 37 appearances for Milan last season, scoring two goals and providing three assists.
The midfielder has also continued to represent Croatia. He played four matches at the most recent World Cup, staged in the United States, Canada and Mexico, and supplied one assist.
Croatia were eliminated in the round of 32 after losing 2-1 to Portugal.
Modric welcomes Ramos arrival
Modric also welcomed Milan’s signing of Goncalo Ramos, who joined from Paris Saint-Germain on a contract running until the summer of 2031.
“I have followed Ramos a lot, and he is a great striker. He may be the player we needed,” Modric said.
“I hope he continues to produce the high-level performances he has delivered at all the clubs he has played for.”
Ramos’ arrival forms part of Milan’s preparations for the new season, while Modric’s extension gives the club the continued experience of a player who remains determined to compete for major honours.
The former Real Madrid midfielder says his motivation remains intact and that his decision to stay was based on both his physical condition and his desire to continue playing at the highest level.
For Modric, the chance to pursue trophies in the Milan shirt remains the central reason for extending his time in Italy.
