Liverpool weigh up £50m move for Valencia winger David Otorbi

Liverpool could abandon their interest in Valencia winger David Otorbi if the teenager’s release clause rises from £30m to £50m, according to Football Insider.

The increase would take the potential cost of the 19-year-old Nigeria international from about €36m to roughly €60m. Although Liverpool are interested in Otorbi’s potential, the club are understood to be prioritising signings who can strengthen Arne Slot’s squad immediately during the January transfer window.

Valencia clause could change Liverpool’s thinking

Otorbi is among the young players being monitored by Liverpool ahead of the next transfer window. His contract currently contains a £30m release clause, but Valencia could increase it to £50m under the terms of the agreement.

Such a change would significantly affect the Premier League club’s assessment of the deal. Liverpool recognise the winger’s promise, but a substantial increase in his asking price could make the transfer considerably less attractive.

The Spanish club’s decision on the clause is therefore expected to be central to whether the Reds continue pursuing the player. At 19, Otorbi has considerable room for development, but his profile is more closely associated with a long-term investment than an established first-team solution.

Liverpool want immediate impact

Financial considerations are not the only factor influencing Liverpool’s position. Football Insider reports that the club intend to focus in January on players capable of making an immediate contribution.

That approach could work against Otorbi, whose impact at senior level remains to be established. Liverpool’s recruitment priorities appear to be centred on addressing current squad needs rather than committing substantial funds to a player whose main value may emerge in the future.

Spending as much as £50m on a young winger would therefore need to be justified by the player’s ability to contribute quickly. If Liverpool conclude that Otorbi would require time to adapt, they may decide that the proposed fee does not match their short-term objectives.

Decision will depend on fee and squad needs

Liverpool’s interest does not necessarily mean they will make an offer. Their eventual decision is likely to depend on whether Valencia raise the release clause and whether Otorbi is considered capable of meeting the club’s immediate sporting requirements.

Should the clause reach £50m, Liverpool could turn their attention to alternative targets and use their resources on more proven reinforcements.

The January transfer window will determine whether the Reds are prepared to invest in Otorbi’s potential or instead choose players who can deliver an immediate improvement. Valencia are due to play Elche in the 11th round of the Spanish league before then.
