Liverpool walked away from Ibrahima Konate talks despite May breakthrough
Liverpool have confirmed they walked away from contract renewal talks with Ibrahima Konate, according to L’Equipe, ending what looked like a promising extension discussion.
Earlier in May, the French defender was widely reported to be close to agreeing fresh terms at Anfield, with both sides seemingly aligned on key points. However, the club ultimately decided not to proceed with the proposed agreement, leaving Konate set to depart when his deal expires.
The 27-year-old joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021 and had previously expressed hope about extending his stay at the club. His departure now appears confirmed after negotiations broke down completely.
Konate remains a sought-after defender, with Real Madrid particularly interested in securing him on a free transfer.
Spanish reports indicate that Real Madrid club will sign Konate if Florentino Pérez remains president following the upcoming elections. His camp has denied any pre-agreement exists, though the move looks increasingly likely. There is also a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, but the Spanish side is highly determined to sign the defender.
