Liverpool reappoint Julian Ward as sporting director after Richard Hughes exit

Liverpool have brought back Julian Ward as sporting director, with the former office-holder returning to replace Richard Hughes following his move to Saudi club Al-Hilal.

Ward previously held the role during the 2022-2023 season. He most recently worked as technical director for Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG).

FSG president Mike Gordon said Ward’s experience would strengthen the club’s football operations and help head coach Andoni Iraola.

“The knowledge and expertise he brings will only enhance our football operations, while also ensuring Andoni [Iraola] is provided with the support he requires as he continues to make such a positive impression as head coach,” Gordon said in Liverpool’s announcement.

Ward said the club was entering a period of change while retaining the principles that have shaped its identity.

“This is an exciting period for Liverpool on and off the pitch in which change and opportunity go hand in hand, but at the same time the culture, values and principles that have underpinned the club for so long remain as strong as ever,” he said.

The appointment marks Ward’s return to Liverpool after he initially joined the club in 2012. His early work covered scouting, recruitment and player development strategy before he progressed to the sporting director position.

Hughes’ departure is the latest in a series of senior executive changes at the club in recent months. Michael Edwards, who had been Liverpool owner FSG’s chief executive of football, also left the organisation.
