Barcelona receive defensive boost as three players near return before Atletico test

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is hopeful of having Andreas Christensen, Eric Garcia and Jules Kounde available again for the La Liga meeting with Atletico Madrid.

The three defenders are nearing the end of their recovery programmes, according to Radio Catalunya, offering Flick a potential solution to the shortage of defensive options that has affected his team in recent weeks.

The fixture, which is in the 12th round of La Liga, carries significant importance in the title race. Barcelona lead Atletico Madrid by two points and are three points clear of Real Madrid, meaning the result at the Metropolitano could have a major impact on the battle for top spot.

The Atletico Madrid and Barcelona match is listed for 08 November 2026.

Christensen was the first of the three players to suffer an injury. The Denmark defender sustained a tear to the rectus femoris muscle, part of the quadriceps, during Barcelona’s match against Sevilla at the Sanchez Pizjuan.

After a month and a half out, Christensen joined full team training on Sunday, marking an important step in his recovery. His participation increases the possibility that he could return to the squad for the meeting with Atletico Madrid.

Garcia and Kounde were both injured during Barcelona’s victory over Real Betis. Garcia suffered a muscular problem in the rectus femoris of his right thigh, while France defender Kounde sustained an ankle sprain.

Neither player’s return has been confirmed, but both have completed advanced stages of their rehabilitation and are being considered for a place in the squad.

Flick will hope the trio can complete their recoveries before the match, with their availability set to give him additional choices in defence for one of the most difficult games of the season.
