Liverpool fight back to beat Atletico Madrid in Champions League thriller

Liverpool came from behind to defeat Atletico Madrid 2-1 at Anfield in one of the standout fixtures of the opening round of the Champions League league phase.

The Spanish side took an early lead through Marcos Llorente, but Liverpool recovered before half-time and completed the turnaround five minutes after the interval through Alexis Mac Allister.

The result gave Liverpool a fourth successive Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid, extending their dominance in this fixture. According to Opta, Atletico have now lost four consecutive matches against the same opponent in the competition for the first time in their history.

It was an absorbing contest for much of the evening, with both teams enjoying spells of control and creating attacking danger during the two halves.

Atletico started with confidence and moved in front after 15 minutes. Llorente continued his strong scoring record at Anfield in the Champions League, registering his fifth goal at the stadium in the competition.

The midfielder received a superb through ball from Julian Alvarez before producing a precise strike to beat Liverpool goalkeeper and give the visitors the advantage.

The opening goal did not settle the match. Liverpool responded by increasing the pressure, helped by strong backing from the home crowd, and eventually found an equaliser six minutes before half-time.

The goal followed a moment of uncertainty in the Atletico defence. New signing Ronald Araujo used his heel to play the ball into the path of Dominik Szoboszlai, who kept his composure to send a low shot into the far right corner of Jan Oblak’s goal.

That goal brought Liverpool level and ensured they went into the interval with the momentum beginning to shift in their favour.

Liverpool carried that attacking intent into the second half and completed their comeback in the 50th minute.

Alexis Mac Allister created the decisive moment with a powerful, unexpected effort from outside the penalty area. Oblak was unable to reach the shot as it flew into the net, putting the hosts 2-1 ahead.

The strike turned the match around and gave Liverpool the lead for the first time, after Atletico had looked capable of taking control in the opening stages.

The match had begun at a fast pace, with neither side able to establish sustained control. Atletico’s early breakthrough was answered by Liverpool before the break, while the hosts’ quick second-half goal underlined how dramatically the balance had shifted.

Liverpool held on to secure a valuable victory in their opening league-phase fixture and continued their perfect recent Champions League record against Atletico Madrid. For the Spanish club, the defeat also created an unwanted piece of history: they had never previously been beaten four times in a row by one opponent in the competition.
