Liverpool fans rally around Jeremy Jacquet after Fulham stalemate

Jeremy Jacquet was surrounded by fans following Liverpool’s 0-0 draw with Fulham on Saturday, with the young defender attracting attention as he attempted to leave Anfield.

Liverpool endured another frustrating afternoon as their difficult start to the campaign continued with a goalless draw against Fulham.

The result means Liverpool have failed to win either of their opening two home league games for just the third time in 63 years, adding further pressure to manager Andoni Iraola after a mixed start to his tenure.

The Reds were particularly disappointing in attack, while defensive uncertainty allowed Fulham several opportunities to threaten the home side.

Liverpool appeared short of both energy and ideas throughout the contest, with the performance leaving supporters frustrated at full-time.

Footage shared by journalist Keefe Irwin later showed Jacquet being approached by Liverpool supporters as he sat in his car while attempting to leave the stadium.

The 21-year-old was asked to sign autographs and take photographs with some of the young fans.

Jacquet briefly stopped to accommodate the requests before returning to his car rather than delaying traffic for longer.

Fans defend Liverpool youngster

Some supporters criticised the defender online for not spending more time with the fans, but others quickly came to his defence after seeing the circumstances surrounding the incident.

One supporter argued that Jacquet had little choice given the location and traffic situation.

“There is a right time and place for that, and this is not it. Do you want him to stop there and possibly be questioned by the police? That is a dangerous place to stop,” one user wrote.

Another supporter criticised those who had abused the player for not stopping.

“If you’re abusing players for not stopping, you’re the type of people they shouldn’t be stopping for.”

A third fan also defended Jacquet and questioned why he was expected to remain stopped on a busy road.

“He doesn’t owe anyone anything and stopping at traffic lights on a busy main road is dangerous. Anyone shouting abuse doesn’t fucking deserve anything from him anyway.”

Jacquet could make way for Leoni

Jacquet has started every game for Liverpool so far this season, but his run in the starting XI could come to an end when the Reds return to action on Tuesday.

Liverpool face Tottenham in the EFL Cup, with fellow youngster Giovanni Leoni a potential replacement for Jacquet in defence.

The match offers Iraola an opportunity to respond to Saturday’s underwhelming display and give Liverpool a much-needed lift after a frustrating opening to the campaign.
