Crystal Palace appeal Jean-Philippe Mateta red card after Tottenham defeat amid striker crisis
Crystal Palace have lodged an appeal against Jean-Philippe Mateta’s red card following their 2-0 Premier League defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, hoping to overturn a decision that could further complicate their fight against relegation.
The France international was sent off in the 13th minute at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after catching Micky van de Ven with a studs-up challenge while both players contested a loose ball.
Referee Michael Oliver initially showed Mateta a yellow card but changed his decision to a straight red following a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
Palace believe the dismissal was harsh, arguing that the striker’s challenge was accidental and that he was concentrating on winning the ball without being aware of Van de Ven’s approaching presence.
The south London club are now seeking to have the decision overturned to avoid losing one of their most important attacking players for three matches.
The potential suspension comes at a difficult moment for manager Pierre Sage, whose side are struggling for results and remain in the Premier League relegation zone following another disappointing outing.
Mateta faces three-match ban as Palace appeal
The dismissal against Tottenham means Mateta could be handed a three-match suspension if Palace’s appeal is unsuccessful.
Under the standard Premier League disciplinary rules, a straight red card for serious foul play carries an automatic three-game ban.
That would rule the French forward out of Sunday’s home fixture against Liverpool, as well as subsequent league encounters against Coventry City and Hull City.
Palace are particularly concerned about the potential absence because of their limited options in attack, with Jorgen Strand Larsen already sidelined through injury.
The club’s appeal is therefore an attempt to retain Mateta’s services during a crucial period of the season as they seek to climb away from the relegation places.
The Eagles believe the circumstances surrounding the challenge should be considered, maintaining that Mateta did not deliberately target Van de Ven.
Tottenham defeat deepens Palace’s troubles
Mateta’s early dismissal left Palace with a difficult task against Tottenham, who capitalised on their numerical advantage to secure all three points.
Archie Gray and Jan Paul van Hecke scored to condemn the visitors to a 2-0 defeat, extending their struggles in the league.
The result leaves Palace in the relegation zone and increases the pressure on Sage as he attempts to turn around the club’s fortunes.
Losing Mateta for three additional matches would represent another significant blow, particularly given the team’s existing injury problems and shortage of recognised centre-forwards.
Eddie Nketiah faces attacking responsibility
Should the appeal fail, Eddie Nketiah could become Palace’s only available striker for the upcoming fixtures against Liverpool, Coventry City and Hull City.
The former Arsenal forward would be expected to shoulder much of the attacking responsibility in Mateta’s absence, placing further pressure on Sage to find solutions with his limited options.
With the relegation battle intensifying, Palace will be desperate to have their appeal accepted and avoid losing another key player at a critical stage of the campaign.
