Lionel Messi returns to Rosario to mourn father Jorge

Lionel Messi has returned to his birthplace of Rosario in Argentina following the death of his father, Jorge Messi, who died aged 68 after a lengthy illness.

The Inter Miami captain arrived in the city on Saturday evening to attend farewell ceremonies for his father, with the family expected to mark his death in a private setting.

Jorge was one of the most influential figures in Messi’s football career. He managed his son’s affairs and oversaw his off-field interests from the early stages of his career, playing a major role in Messi’s development and eventual move to professional football in Europe.

He was also responsible for arranging the medical treatment Messi required while the future Argentina international was a youth player at Newell’s Old Boys. When Messi moved to Spain and joined Barcelona, Jorge accompanied him on that journey, while Messi’s mother remained in Rosario to organise matters for the rest of the family.

Throughout the years, Jorge maintained a close presence alongside his son while largely avoiding the spotlight. He rarely appeared in the media or gave interviews, instead choosing to concentrate on his family and support Messi’s career away from public attention.

Jorge leaves behind his wife, Celia Cuccittini, and their children Lionel, Rodrigo, Matias and Maria Sol, as well as his grandchildren and other members of the family.

Messi’s return to Rosario comes as he prepares to say goodbye to the father who played a central role in both his personal life and his path in football. From supporting his son during his youth career at Newell’s Old Boys to accompanying him during his move to Barcelona, Jorge remained closely involved in the decisions and challenges that shaped Messi’s rise.

The family farewell is taking place in Rosario, the city where Messi was born and where several members of his family continued to live while his football career developed in Europe. His mother stayed there during the move to Spain, helping to manage the needs of the wider family as Jorge travelled with their son.

Jorge’s contribution to Messi’s career extended beyond formal management. His involvement included ensuring that the young player received the treatment he needed and helping guide him through the early stages of his transition from Argentina to Spain.

Away from football’s public gaze, he continued to support Messi throughout the years. His preference for a private role meant that he was seldom seen in interviews or media appearances, despite his importance to the career of the Inter Miami captain.

The mourning period in Rosario will allow Messi and his family to pay tribute to Jorge in the close family atmosphere described by those around them.
