Leeds United rout Newcastle United to climb to third in Premier League

Leeds United moved up to third in the Premier League after a 4-1 win over Newcastle United at Elland Road on Monday, handing Magpies manager Matthias Jaissle his first defeat.

Lewis Miley’s own goal set Leeds on their way, with Jayden Bogle, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Noah Okafor adding further strikes. Bazoumana Toure scored a late consolation for Newcastle, but the visitors were already well beaten.

Newcastle had begun life under Jaissle positively after the summer departures of manager Eddie Howe and key players Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali. The club, despite being owned by the Saudi sovereign wealth fund, chose to recruit emerging players to replace those who left.

At Elland Road, however, Newcastle were overpowered by a more experienced Leeds side.

“It was clear from the start and I said that many times that we will have up and downs, challenges along the way,” said Jaissle. “We faced that challenge and it’s tough, it’s really tough.”

The visitors’ problems began before the 20-minute mark when Nico Gonzalez was forced off and replaced under the concussion-substitute protocol.

That left 18-year-old Sean Steur and 20-year-old Miley together in central midfield. Miley then endured a particularly unfortunate moment when he got the final touch on Leeds’ opening goal.

Ao Tanaka’s effort took two deflections before looping towards goal, with Miley credited with the own goal.

Newcastle had little time to recover. Leeds doubled their lead two minutes later when Calvert-Lewin rose to meet James Justin’s cross. His header clipped Bogle and ended in the bottom corner, with the goal awarded to Leeds’ right-back.

Calvert-Lewin then registered a goal of his own to score in his fifth successive league game at Elland Road. He powered beyond Sven Botman before sliding the ball beneath Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek.

Leeds had chances to extend their advantage early in the second half. Anton Stach intercepted a poor pass from Hornicek but lifted his attempted dink just wide.

Okafor eventually made it 4-0 before the hour. Newcastle failed to deal with a long throw and the Swiss striker volleyed into the net from the edge of the penalty area.

“Perfect start right now with eight points, terrific performance,” said Leeds manager Daniel Farke. “Energy, quality and good structure in and without possession.”

Toure reduced the deficit in stoppage time, but his goal did little to alter the outcome.

The victory leaves Leeds behind only defending champions Arsenal and Manchester City. Newcastle stay on five points but drop to 12th because of their negative goal difference.
