Desailly, who played for Chelsea between 1998 and 2004 and now serves as a consultant for Canal+, closely monitors the performances of the Blues. According to the 1998 World Cup champion, for PSG to earn respect on the European stage, they must not only defeat Chelsea but also aim to win the UEFA Champions League. Without this, PSG will continue to be perceived as a club focused solely on spending.
“In France, we still have to prove ourselves on the European stage. What PSG has achieved is commendable, but it has been primarily at the domestic level, against teams like Leverkusen… We’re uncertain about PSG’s true standing. We acknowledge their potential, but they haven’t fully utilized their capabilities yet. Chelsea’s strength lies in their counter-attacks. They make their opponents believe they have the upper hand. PSG must avoid falling into their trap. Ultimately, Chelsea isn’t concerned about being favored or not; they have the experience. I appreciate PSG and the energy they bring, but compared to the Premier League and La Liga, PSG doesn’t have the same presence. Prestige is earned through victories. Winning two consecutive French championships and spending millions doesn’t automatically grant you credibility in the football world,” said Desailly in an interview with 20 Minutes.
According to Desailly, PSG must strive for European victory starting from this year.
