Senegal star Lamine Camara emerges as Marc-Vivien Foé Award contender

Senegal international Lamine Camara has emerged as a leading contender for the 2026 Marc-Vivien Foé Award after establishing himself as a central figure in Monaco’s midfield.

The 22-year-old is among eleven nominees shortlisted for the prize, which recognises the best African player in Ligue 1 each season.

The winner will succeed Moroccan defender Achraf Hakimi, with the final three candidates set to be announced on May 5.

Camara’s inclusion reflects his growing influence in France’s top flight, where he is now in his third season as a regular starter. After an injury-hit start to the campaign, the midfielder has returned to full fitness and has since played a key role in Monaco’s performances.

His progress has been particularly noticeable in recent months. According to Radio Foot International pundit Patrick Julliard, Camara has taken another step forward following his return from international duty.

” Especially since his return from the Africa Cup of Nations, I think he’s really improved. He continues to be a player with a good eye for the game, who makes good passes, who manages to find the right spaces, and to set up his attackers well. So yes, it’s a confirmation, but I had no doubt .”

Trained at Génération Foot, the same academy that produced his idol Sadio Mané, Camara followed a familiar pathway into European football by joining Metz in 2023.

He impressed during his time there before opting to continue his development at Monaco, despite attracting interest from multiple clubs.

At Monaco, his role has become increasingly important, particularly since the appointment of Sébastien Pocognoli as head coach in October.

His consistent performances have helped him secure a regular starting position in a competitive midfield setup.

” There was a bit of uncertainty before the Belgian’s appointment. His starting position is primarily a reward for his consistency, for establishing himself among the key midfielders in Ligue 1, and particularly at AS Monaco .”

Camara, who has already earned 30 international caps for Senegal and featured in the Africa Cup of Nations final, was also nominated for the award last season.

His continued presence among the contenders highlights his steady rise and growing reputation.

As Monaco push to secure qualification for next season’s Champions League, Camara is expected to play a crucial role.

Beyond club football, attention will soon turn to the international stage, with the midfielder aiming to be part of Senegal’s squad for the upcoming World Cup.
