La Liga: In-form Morocco midfielder Azzedine Ounahi receives praise after Girona’s win against Athletic Club

Moroccan international Azzedine Ounahi continues to attract attention across Spanish stadiums, emerging as one of the standout midfielders this season following a series of impressive performances with Girona FC.

Since arriving in the La Liga, the Moroccan midfielder appears to have rediscovered his best form.

His displays have reminded many observers of the influential role he played with the Morocco national football team during major international competitions.

After previously dealing with pressure during his time at Olympique de Marseille, Ounahi now looks far more confident, showing composure on the ball and a clear ability to control the rhythm of Girona’s midfield.

The numbers highlight his growing influence. So far this season, the Moroccan has scored four goals and registered two assists in 14 appearances, accumulating 942 minutes on the pitch. Yet his contribution extends beyond statistics, with his influence particularly noticeable in high-profile encounters.

Ounahi has produced strong displays against leading sides such as Real Madrid CF and Real Sociedad. He also recently impressed against Athletic Bilbao, where his technical ability and composure in decisive moments helped him stand out as one of the key figures in the match, earning Man of the Match honours on several occasions.

His performances have not gone unnoticed in Spanish media circles. Journalist Adrián Blanco, writing for Marca, praised the Moroccan midfielder’s quality and influence in the Spanish top flight.

“Onahi is one of the best players in La Liga. He has tremendous talent and an exceptional ability to create chances out of nothing. I don’t know how many players in the Premier League are capable of delivering a decisive pass like the one he gave to his teammate Viktor Tsygankov for Girona’s second goal against Alaves. It’s true football artistry,” Blanco said.

In a similar assessment, journalist Miguel Quintana explained on Radio Marca that Girona felt the impact of Ounahi’s absence during his participation in the Africa Cup of Nations, as well as during his spell on the sidelines with injury. According to Quintana, the team continued to develop despite missing one of its most influential players.

Ounahi first captured global attention with Morocco during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where he delivered memorable performances in crucial matches, particularly against Portugal national football team and Spain national football team.

Although he later struggled to maintain that same level during his stint in France, his current spell in Spain appears to be unfolding very differently. The possession-based style of play associated with La Liga suits the Moroccan midfielder’s strengths, allowing him the space to fully express his technical ability.

With his impressive form continuing, Ounahi is steadily building a reputation as one of the most exciting midfielders in the Spanish league and could become one of Girona’s most influential players in the seasons ahead.
