King Mohammed VI pardons Senegal fans jailed during 2025 AFCON
King Mohammed VI of Morocco has granted a royal pardon to Senegalese football supporters convicted over offenses committed during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations hosted in the North African country.
The announcement was made in a statement released by the Royal Office ahead of Eid Al-Adha, with Moroccan authorities describing the decision as a humanitarian gesture rooted in the longstanding relationship between Morocco and Senegal.
According to the statement, the supporters had been sentenced over misdemeanors and crimes committed during the continental football tournament staged between December 21, 2025 and January 18, 2026.
The Royal Office said the pardon was issued “on humanitarian grounds” and also in recognition of the “historic brotherly ties between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Senegal.”
AFCON incidents prompt legal action
While details surrounding the offenses were not disclosed, the convicted supporters were among individuals sanctioned during or after incidents linked to the Africa Cup of Nations, which drew thousands of travelling fans from across the continent.
Morocco hosted the competition for the first time in decades, with the tournament attracting significant attention both on and off the pitch. The event also served as a major test for the country ahead of future international football assignments.
In its statement, the Royal Office stressed that the royal pardon reflected “the depth of the bonds of brotherhood, friendship and cooperation” between the two nations.
The statement further described the decision as one inspired by Morocco’s values of “compassion, mercy, kindness, generosity and the spirit of tolerance.”
Eid message to Senegal
Beyond the pardon, King Mohammed VI also extended Eid Al-Adha wishes to Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, as well as the Senegalese authorities and citizens.
Relations between Morocco and Senegal have remained strong across political, economic and cultural sectors, with both countries often highlighting their close diplomatic partnership.
The Royal Office concluded its message with prayers for King Mohammed VI, Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, Prince Moulay Rachid and members of the Moroccan Royal Family.
