Khalid Al-Ghannam: Al-Qadsiah deal threatens Al-Ittihad’s transfer plans

Al-Qadsiah are close to completing a deal for Al-Ettifaq winger Khalid Al-Ghannam, a move that could see them beat Al-Ittihad to one of their main domestic transfer targets this summer.

Negotiations between the two Saudi Pro League clubs have reached an advanced stage, according to Saudi newspaper Al-Riyadiya. The clubs have reached an initial understanding over the transfer, with the remaining discussions focused on agreeing the personal terms of Al-Ghannam’s contract.

Al-Ettifaq are expected to receive between 20m and 25m Saudi riyals for the winger if the transfer is completed. Al-Nassr are also set to benefit from the deal, with the club entitled to approximately 25% of the transfer fee under a sell-on clause agreed when Al-Ghannam moved to Al-Ettifaq at the beginning of 2024.

The developments represent a setback for Al-Ittihad, who had identified Al-Ghannam as one of their leading domestic options during the current transfer window. However, financial difficulties at the Jeddah club have restricted their ability to pursue the player with the flexibility required, creating an opportunity for Al-Qadsiah to advance their interest.

Al-Riyadiya reported that Al-Qadsiah’s management had stepped up its efforts over the past few hours in an attempt to conclude the agreement quickly. The club are keen to prevent other teams from entering the negotiations, particularly with the start of the new season approaching.

Al-Ghannam is regarded as one of the leading Saudi wingers in the Roshn Saudi League. Al-Qadsiah are seeking to bring him back after several years away as part of a wider plan to strengthen their squad with high-quality domestic players before next season.

The proposed transfer would give Al-Qadsiah another notable local player as they continue preparations for the new campaign. Their priority is now to finalise the remaining contractual details with Al-Ghannam after reaching an initial agreement with Al-Ettifaq.

For Al-Ittihad, the situation highlights the impact of their current financial problems on their recruitment plans. They had placed Al-Ghannam among their preferred targets, but their limited room for manoeuvre has allowed Al-Qadsiah to move closer to securing the deal.

The transfer fee would provide Al-Ettifaq with a substantial return, while Al-Nassr’s sell-on entitlement would ensure they receive a share of the proceeds from the player’s move in 2024. The deal remains dependent on Al-Qadsiah and Al-Ghannam reaching final agreement over the winger’s personal terms.
