Kgomotso Madiba making his mark at Fluminense after South Africa breakthrough

Kgomotso Madiba is flourishing at Brazilian club Fluminense after completing his move to the Rio de Janeiro side in January 2026, with the South African attacker becoming an important member of their Under-20 team.

The 18-year-old first visited Fluminense’s Xerem academy in 2025 as part of an exchange programme. His performances during a trial convinced the club that he had the ability to progress within their youth system, although Fluminense had to wait before completing the signing.

Madiba was only 17 when he was assessed by the club, meaning the transfer required approval before it could go ahead. He turned 18 in December 2025, clearing the way for the move to be officially concluded the following month.

Since joining Fluminense, Madiba has established himself as a key figure in the club’s Under-20 side. He has also begun adapting to life away from South Africa and can now speak some Portuguese.

In a recent interview with Brazilian publication GE, Madiba reflected on the opportunity to develop his career in Brazil and expressed his gratitude to the coaches who have trusted him.

“Young men in South Africa don’t always get an opportunity like this. So you have to embrace it and be grateful. Also, to the coaches who have been giving me the opportunity to play. I’m very happy.”

Madiba’s move to Fluminense comes after he helped South Africa’s Under-20 side, Amajita, win the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations. That success has been followed by a new challenge in Brazilian football, where he is continuing his development in one of the country’s established academy systems.

The forward also revealed that Vini Jr. and Neymar are the two Brazilian players he looks up to most. Madiba said he sees similarities between his own approach and the way the two stars use their dribbling and individual skill.

“Vini Jr. and Neymar. Because of their style. The way they dribble, I feel that it is similar to mine. When I dribble and when I see them doing it, I feel that I can say they are my idols, my teachers.

“Before matches, I watch them and try to implement the things they do into my own game as well. It is their unique style of play. I believe we are similar.”

Madiba’s time at Fluminense is therefore serving both as an opportunity to establish himself in Brazil and as a chance to learn from players he has admired from a distance. The teenager is now combining that inspiration with regular football for the club’s Under-20 team as he continues to make his name in a new country.

His progress has also placed him among a growing group of South African youngsters seeking opportunities abroad, following his successful spell with Amajita at the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations.
