Kevin Danso condemns racist abuse after social media attacks following Brighton draw
Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Danso has spoken out after being subjected to racist abuse online following his side’s 2-2 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League.
The match ended in frustration for Tottenham Hotspur after they conceded a stoppage-time equaliser, with Georginio Rutter scoring following an error involving Danso.
In the aftermath, the defender was targeted with a wave of abusive messages on social media, prompting both a personal response and an official club statement.
Danso addressed the situation directly on Instagram, acknowledging the disappointment of the result while strongly condemning the abuse he received.
“This is not the result we hoped for. We gave it our all and we will continue to work.”
“I’ve seen the comments. Racist insults have no place anywhere. They don’t define me.”
He added that he remains focused on his performances on the pitch and determined to move forward despite the incident.
“I know who I am and why I play. We will come back stronger.”
Tottenham moved quickly to support their player, issuing a firm statement condemning what they described as “abject and dehumanising” racist behaviour.
The club confirmed that the matter had been reported to relevant authorities and social media platforms for investigation and removal of the content.
“Kevin has our full support. No one in this club will face this alone. Racism has no place in football.”
The club also reiterated its commitment to pursuing those responsible, working alongside organisations that monitor online abuse. It warned that offenders could face criminal action, stadium bans and other legal consequences.
The incident occurred during the Premier League’s anti-racism initiative weekend, further highlighting ongoing concerns about discriminatory abuse directed at players online.
Tottenham stressed that it is determined to assist in identifying those involved and ensuring appropriate sanctions are applied.
The episode has once again reignited discussion around racism in football and the responsibility of digital platforms to better control abusive behaviour directed at players.
Since yesterday’s fixture against Brighton, which took place during the Premier League’s No Room For Racism weekend, Kevin Danso has been, and continues to be, subject to significant and abhorrent racist abuse on social media.
