Kalvin Phillips returns to Sheffield United on season-long loan from Manchester City

Kalvin Phillips has returned to Sheffield United on a season-long loan from Manchester City, with the midfielder determined to make up for an injury-disrupted spell at the Championship club.

The 30-year-old spent time at Sheffield United on loan in February but made only three appearances before a knee injury brought his spell to an early end. Phillips believes he still has unfinished business with the club and is hoping the move can help revive his career.

“This was the move I wanted. My time was spoiled by my last game and the injury after that, so I’m here to put that right,” Phillips told the Sheffield United website.

“The squad is similar to what it was last year, I’m happy to see everyone and I’m looking forward to coming back fighting fit.”

Phillips joined Manchester City from Leeds United in 2022 after establishing himself as one of England’s leading defensive midfielders. However, he was unable to secure a regular place in the first team at the Etihad Stadium.

During his time with Manchester City, Phillips was part of a squad that won the Premier League and the Champions League. Despite those honours, he struggled to establish himself as a consistent starter for the club.

His difficulties with form following the move also affected his international career. Phillips subsequently lost his place in the England squad and has not represented his country since 2023.

The midfielder’s return gives him another opportunity to rebuild his form with Sheffield United. The club finished 13th in the Championship last season, but Phillips still has the potential to play an important role if he can rediscover consistency and help them challenge for promotion back to the top division.

Chris Wilder’s squad includes several other recognisable names. Former Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford is among them, while club captain Japhet Tanganga and Matt Doherty have both previously played for Tottenham Hotspur.

Former Manchester United youth product Tahith Chong is also part of the squad.

For Phillips, the priority will be to remain fit and regain the rhythm that was interrupted by his knee problem. His previous loan spell ended after just three appearances, but his latest return provides the chance to make a more sustained contribution over a full season.

The move also gives him the opportunity to show that he can still influence a promotion campaign after moving away from the regular first-team picture at Manchester City. Sheffield United will hope his experience at the top level, including his involvement in Premier League and Champions League success, can strengthen their squad in the Championship.

With the midfielder now back at the club and familiar with many of the players around him, Phillips is aiming for a more productive second spell at Sheffield United.
