Kaizer Chiefs weigh major squad reshuffle as Phili and Lilepo linked with exits

Kaizer Chiefs are considering a significant overhaul of their attacking options, with rising star Langelihle Phili high on their recruitment list and several young talents potentially up for sale to cash in on soaring transfer values.

The Premier Soccer League giants are understood to be exploring a player‐plus‐cash offer to bring Stellenbosch FC winger Phili to Naturena, while also weighing up interest in Congolese wide attacker Glody Lilepo and a clutch of homegrown prospects.

Phili remains priority target for Chiefs

Phili, 21, has emerged as one of the most sought‐after wide forwards in the Betway Premiership after an eye‐catching 2025-26 campaign.

The diminutive, pacey winger scored seven goals in 27 league appearances for Stellenbosch last season, operating mainly from the flanks but frequently cutting inside to threaten goal.

Several local reports suggest Kaizer Chiefs have placed him near the top of their transfer shortlist and are ready to test Stellenbosch’s resolve with a structured deal.

One option believed to be under serious consideration is a swap arrangement that could see Ashley du Preez head in the opposite direction as a makeweight, with cash added on top to secure Phili’s services.

Du Preez, whose own form has fluctuated since his arrival at Chiefs, could be used to offset the fee as the Soweto club look to remodel their forward line.

Lilepo future uncertain amid potential clear-out

Glody Lilepo is another attacker whose future at Naturena appears uncertain.

The Congolese wide player contributed five goals and four assists in 27 league fixtures last term, largely deployed in a broad attacking role, but may be moved on if Chiefs decide to freshen up their options in the final third.

Any decision on Lilepo is likely to be shaped by progress in the pursuit of Phili and other offensive targets as the club seek greater cutting edge in front of goal.

Young stars could be sold for ‘100% profit’

The recent big‐money transfer of Rele Mofokeng to Belgium has sharpened focus within the Kaizer Chiefs hierarchy on the resale potential of their brightest academy graduates.

With European and domestic clubs increasingly willing to pay sizeable fees for emerging South African talent, Chiefs’ board is believed to be assessing whether to cash in on some of their most valuable young assets.

Among the current squad, Mfundo Vilakazi, Wandile Duba and Mduduzi Shabalala are widely regarded as the players with the highest potential resale value.

Newcomers Kruger United to host Chiefs on opening day

Away from the transfer market, the Betway Premiership has confirmed that newly promoted Kruger United will host Kaizer Chiefs on the opening day of the 2026‐27 season.

The fixture is scheduled for Saturday, 1 August, marking Chiefs’ first league assignment following the conclusion of the World Cup.

With international duties now over for many players, attention is set to swing back to the domestic “bread and butter” of league football, where Chiefs will aim to start strongly against the top‐flight newcomers.

The shape of their squad by then – and whether Phili arrives, Lilepo departs, or any of Vilakazi, Duba or Shabalala are sold – could offer the clearest indication yet of the club’s evolving transfer strategy and long‐term direction.
