Nigerian Samson Adamu has been appointed general secretary of the Confederation of African Football (Caf), the continental governing body announced on Sunday.
Adamu had served as acting general secretary since March, following the resignation of Veron Mosengo-Omba. Mosengo-Omba later became president of the football federation in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Caf president Patrice Motsepe said Adamu was selected after a comprehensive recruitment process. The role was publicly advertised and several candidates were interviewed before the appointment was made.
The Adamu has been part of Caf for the past eight years. He initially worked as director of competitions before moving into the role of director of tournaments and events.
He is the son of Amos Adamu, who served on Fifa’s executive committee before being banned in 2010 for breaching bribery rules.
Adamu’s appointment continues a long history of senior Caf officials from the same family. Egypt’s Mourad Fahmy was general secretary from 1961 to 1982, followed by his son Mustapha Fahmy, who held the position from 1982 to 2010.
Mustapha Fahmy’s son, Amr Fahmy, later served as Caf general secretary from 2017 to 2019.
