Kaizer Chiefs brought their players, coaches and staff together for a cultural team-building event during Heritage Month at the Kaizer Chiefs Village in Naturena.
The gathering celebrated South Africa’s diversity through traditional clothing, music and food. Chairman Kaizer Motaung and sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr. were among those who took part, alongside coach Fernando da Cruz and the rest of the squad.
No player or member of staff was allocated a particular culture or tradition to represent. Those seen in traditional dress appeared to reflect several South African cultural groups, including Siswati, Sepedi, Sesotho, IsiZulu and Tshivenda.
The event was not widely publicised by the club. Short clips and images emerged on social media fan pages, rather than through Kaizer Chiefs’ official platforms, with the club choosing “to keep the event internal”.
The occasion gave the squad a chance to spend time together away from the pitch, stadium and training ground during the Fifa international break. It also provided an opportunity for players and staff to build stronger relationships and develop a greater sense of unity.
Kaizer Chiefs have made a decent start to the season, although their campaign included a first-round exit in the MTN8 quarter-finals. Defensive errors in the Betway Premiership have also prevented an even stronger beginning, but the club remain unbeaten in the league.
Several players used the mini-break to spend time with their families. Nkosingiphile Ngcobo received support from his team-mates during his Umembeso in KZN, while defender Inacio Miguel and striker Flavio Silva took family holidays on islands.
The squad will soon return to competitive action, with a demanding period ahead as Kaizer Chiefs begin their continental campaign. They face African Arrows in two-legged qualifiers for a place in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage.
The club’s success in that campaign will require the players to maintain their focus after the break. Da Cruz, who also participated in the Heritage Month activities at the Village, will hope the sense of togetherness created by the event continues through to the end of the season.
Kaizer Chiefs are aiming to achieve their targets across their domestic and continental commitments, with the coach relying on the squad’s relationships and collective spirit as the schedule becomes more demanding.
