Kaizer Chiefs set to unveil Langelihle Phili after transfer deal with Stellenbosch FC

Kaizer Chiefs are expected to complete the signing of Langelihle Phili on Monday after the winger arrived in South Africa and the club moved into the final stages of the transfer agreement.

The speedy forward landed at OR Tambo International Airport on Sunday, with Amakhosi understood to be working around the clock to complete the remaining paperwork and formalities.

Phili’s arrival follows successful negotiations between Kaizer Chiefs’ management and Stellenbosch FC. The transfer forms part of a major exchange deal that will see Ashley Du Preez and Given Msimango move to Stellenbosch FC, known as Stellies, with a cash payment also included.

The two players were absent as Kaizer Chiefs opened their season with a 3-1 victory over Kruger United on Saturday. Du Preez had already been seen in Cape Town the previous day, further indicating that the move to Stellenbosch was close to being concluded.

Phili is now expected to complete the final personal terms and undergo his medical assessments before being officially presented by Kaizer Chiefs. The club are hopeful of unveiling the player, who is joining his boyhood club, within the next few hours.

The winger is set to become the headline addition to the squad, but it remains unclear whether he will be ready to play a significant role immediately after his arrival.

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz will be keen to bring Phili into his plans as quickly as possible. Chiefs face Lamontville Golden Arrows on Sunday in the quarter-finals of the MTN8, giving the coach a short period in which to integrate the new signing into his team.

Even once the transfer is completed, Phili will face strong competition for a place in the starting line-up. Mfundo Vilakazi, Luke Baartman, Pule Mmodi and Asanele Velebayi are all competing for positions on the wings.

The potential departure of Glody Lilepo could ease that competition to some extent, although Phili will still have to establish himself among the club’s existing wide options.

The move represents a significant reshaping of both squads. Kaizer Chiefs are adding an explosive attacking player as they prepare for their MTN8 quarter-final, while Stellenbosch FC are set to receive two established players as well as an additional financial payment.

With the paperwork, personal terms and medical checks still being finalised, the deal is not yet officially complete. However, Phili’s arrival in Johannesburg and the progress of the negotiations have left Kaizer Chiefs on the verge of confirming the transfer.
