Kaizer Chiefs secures CAF Confederation Cup spot

Kaizer Chiefs have officially secured a third-place finish in the Betway Premiership after a convincing 2-0 victory over Sekhukhune United at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium.

The crucial victory guarantees Amakhosi a place in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup, marking a significant achievement in what has been a demanding campaign for the Soweto giants.

Goals from Tashreeq Morris and Mfundo Vilakazi ensured maximum points for Chiefs, with both players finding the back of the net for the first time this season in a memorable night for the Glamour Boys.

Chiefs entered the clash knowing victory would mathematically confirm third place, and they produced one of their most composed performances of the campaign. From the opening whistle, Amakhosi looked sharper, more aggressive, and determined to finish the season strongly.

The visitors dominated large spells of the encounter in Polokwane, with Congolese winger Glody Lilepo tormenting Sekhukhune’s defence throughout the evening. His pace, movement, and direct attacking play consistently unsettled Babina Noko as Chiefs created several dangerous opportunities.

Morris eventually broke the deadlock to hand Chiefs a deserved advantage before youngster Vilakazi added the second goal to put the game beyond reach. The strikes not only sealed an important victory but also represented personal milestones for the duo, who both opened their scoring accounts for the season at a decisive moment.

The result lifts Chiefs to 51 points, and with only two matches remaining for fourth-placed AmaZulu FC, Usuthu can no longer catch Amakhosi in the standings. AmaZulu currently sit on 44 points, leaving Chiefs guaranteed to finish inside the top three.

Securing continental football is a major boost for Chiefs, especially after both coaches Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze repeatedly stressed the importance of finishing in the top three amid mounting pressure during the season.

For former Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane and his AmaZulu side, attention now turns to the battle for fourth place. However, they face serious competition from Sekhukhune United, who remain just behind them and are still capable of ending the campaign strongly despite this setback.

The defeat also extended a difficult spell for interim Sekhukhune coach Paulus Masehe, who has managed just one victory in three matches since replacing the sacked Eric Tinkler.

While Sekhukhune struggled to cope with Chiefs’ attacking intensity, Amakhosi supporters will celebrate a result that not only secured continental qualification but also offered a glimpse of renewed belief heading into next season.
