Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen is progressing well from a knee injury and could return to action within, or even before, the club’s initial four-to-six-week estimate.
Petersen suffered a medial collateral ligament injury to his left knee in training two weeks ago. Chiefs confirmed after the incident that the 31-year-old was expected to be unavailable for between four and six weeks.
The setback ended Petersen’s run of appearances at the start of the season, having played in every match before the injury forced him out of the team.
However, sources have indicated that the goalkeeper’s rehabilitation is going well, offering Chiefs encouragement that he may be able to resume playing sooner than first expected.
The club has not officially changed its original recovery timeline. Petersen’s return will still depend on the remainder of his rehabilitation and whether he receives medical clearance to play.
Chiefs used Renaldo Leaner for their final fixture before the FIFA International break. The goalkeeper made his debut in a goalless draw with Golden Arrows at Mbombela Stadium on September 20, keeping a clean sheet in the process.
That performance gave Leaner an opportunity to step in while Petersen recovers, but Chiefs will be hoping their first-choice goalkeeper can complete his rehabilitation without complications.
Petersen’s eventual return date remains uncertain, despite the positive indications surrounding his progress. The club will continue to monitor his condition before deciding when he can rejoin the squad and resume competitive action.
